Dakin Dairy Farm

Located in the heart of Sarasota, Florida, Dakin Dairy Farm is a popular family-run dairy farm that offers tours and farm-fresh fare from fall through spring. The farm also has a year-round market, cafe, and seasonal events. Tours are free, but reservations are recommended. Tours take about half an hour. The farm is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Dakin Dairy Farm is a family-owned and operated business with a long history in dairy farming. The Dakin family began dairying in Maine before moving to Florida in the 1970s. Their father had proclaimed that they would never milk a cow again, but after a disastrous hurricane swept through the state in 1972, Pete Dakin decided to change direction. He later delved into poultry and beef farming, but eventually went back to milking cows.

The award honors the farmers that do good work in their community. Dakin Dairy Farm was chosen from among the more than 43,000 farms in Florida. He was nominated for the award by Andy Neuhofer, a Florida Farm Bureau district supervisor. He said Dakin is a “forward-thinker” who is still in the business even though the dairy industry is dwindling in Florida. Dakin hopes to use his award to spread awareness about the importance of agriculture and dairy farming. Dakin Dairy Farm is the first farm in Manatee County to receive this honor. He is also nominated for the Swisher Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year Award, which will be given in Georgia.
